I love this picture of a snail.
Like many mollusks, snails seem to have been eaten in substantial quantities by early man, as witness the mounds of snail shells found in archaeological sites.

I love escargot. It is a wonderful opportunity to dip a good bread in herb flavored butter with a little chewy thing on top. How is that for a hick assessment? I might add that the escargot available to me the USA are grown in Indonesia.. I cannot bring myself to smoting the shelled slugs in the garden yet, but hey! When I do I know how to serve them!
