At a local junk shop I spied a great anthropomorphic pewter jug with great patina and attitude. The clerk and I wondered what it could be and because of it’s small size I determined that it was probably a chocolate pot.
Too bad it didn’t have a lid or its dolphin spigot because after I googled it I realized I had a Dutch chocolate pot circa 1750 and if it had been complete it would have been worth 1,500. I paid $38.
Very nice end-of-year post for me — I’m in Fairfax, VA and feel as if colonial history is around me. At breakfast we looked up Lord Fairfax. So coffee pots are good.
Have a wonderful year in 2010 and I hope you keep supplying us with great food history and social commentary…
